Perseverance in
2010 for Concrete Pavement
American
Concrete Pavement Association-Southwest Chapter
(ACPA-SW) greets 2010 with renewed energy and
continued perseverance.
Despite major economic downturns and a mid-year
adjustment to the ACPA-SW annual budget, the
ACPA-SW team met and exceeded the goals within
the Association’s Strategic Plan for 2009.
We have worked in California and Nevada to
address challenges and find long term solutions
for concrete pavement in an even, carefully
crafted series of actions that meet our members’
needs.
Because of your support this last year, three
local agency design, construction, and concrete
pavement repair workshops were held in
California. In addition we successfully
completed a Statewide Concrete Pavement Workshop
in Sacramento with Caltrans, the Federal Highway
Administration and University of California
Berkeley, Tech Transfer Center as co-sponsors.
The Just in Time Training sessions between
contractors and Caltrans emphasized quality
concrete pavement during construction. This
program provides that necessary partnership that
Caltrans seeks with contractors and vendors for
concrete pavement solutions. We intend to
maintain or exceed this pace during 2010 of
participating in many meetings with technical
staff and policy makers.
As one of the founding sponsors of the Nevada
Infrastructure Concrete Conference, ACPA-SW
continued its major support and participation in
that annual event. With our partners the
California Nevada Cement Association, the Sierra
Nevada Concrete Association, and the northern
and southern California Concrete Promotion
Councils, we form the Pacific Southwest Concrete
Alliance, sharing resources and coordinating our
promotion efforts.
From these consistent Association efforts, we
have already begun implementation of the ACPA-SW
Strategic Plan for 2010.
It is through you, the members of ACPA-SW and
our many professional colleagues, that ACPA-SW
will be sustained and grow. As a member, you are
recognized as the best by those involved in
concrete pavement. We encourage you to bring new
members to the Chapter.
State budgets in California and Nevada are
dismal as we enter 2010. Although we expect
intense legislative dialogue over the gas tax,
Prop. 42 and transportation bond sales and
expenditures, I pledge to keep our segment of
the surface transportation industry heard.
ACPA-SW is the recognized “go to resource” for
concrete pavement in surface transportation. The
year 2010 will be about construction
methodologies, pavement decisions and the
protection of funding for construction
projects. ACPA-SW works for you, responds to
you, and brings concrete pavement solutions into
the marketplace.
Key personnel working on your behalf are Richard
Moore in Nevada, David Akers in Southern
California, Robert Wallace in Northern
California, and The Ewing Group in Sacramento
and Newport Beach. Plus, you get the benefit of
having National and other state resources
available as needed.
Thank you for your continued involvement and
interest in ACPA – Southwest. We look
forward to more concrete and a prosperous 2010.
Please provide any comments you may have so we
may better serve you.
Sincerely,
Craig A. Hennings
Executive Director
